Community Service
Students in the Sixth Form at BMS can opt to do Community Service instead of Games, on a Wednesday afternoon. There are currently up to 24 students who go to various placements in Bedford, Luton and Moggerhanger. Students can arrange their own placements, which include residential homes, schools and a charity shop.
Placements
Ther are a wide variety of placements which community service participants can pursue to suit their interests and pursuits. Below is a small selection of the diversity of placements open to you through community service.
Visiting Residential Homes
One of the main activities chosen by our students is visiting residential homes accross Bedford. Here, they spend their time in conversation or playing board games with the residents, and adding a bit of variety into their normal day.
Many of our students find it fascinating to hear the stories of some of the residents who have lead long and very interesting lives, and for their part the residents appreciate the company.
Computer Support
Three of our CS sixth formers have undertaken to edit the Bedford Prison newsletter, which is sent from the Prison to relatives of the prisoners.
The newsletter is a quarterly project, edited internally and communicated electronically and makes good use of productivity and ICT skills of sixth formers to aid the community.
Charity Shops
Some of our sixth formers volunteer at charity shops to offer their services. For example, at the Save the Children charity shop in Bedford, where volunteers are able to help by stacking shelves, manning the tills and offering their company. Both the volunteers and the staff have found this to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
COMMUNITY SERVICE LUNCH AND AWARDS 2nd MAY 2007
The first CS Lunch to recognize the achievements of our volunteers took place in the Brownridge Room on the 2nd May, 2007. The Headmaster spoke about the value of volunteering and how much our volunteers' work is appreciated. Several of our students gave a brief account of the work they have been involved in, several MV awards were presented.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of our first BMS Volunteer of the Year Award (06/07) to Ollie Bills for his outstanding work in residential homes and It/website support for local charities.
